What is Judo?

Judo is a traditional Japanese martial art developed at the end of the 19th century. Judo means “gentle way” and its creator; Professor Kano Jigoro
Shihan (a school teacher himself) developed the practice as an educational method for young people. Judo was introduced into the Japanese education system shortly after its development and has continued through the years to play a crucial part in children’s lives.

Our hope at Tsunami Judo is to share the Judo method of education with young people in our local community, the intention being to assist them to develop positive life skills
for their future. “Carefully observe oneself and one’s situation, carefully observe others, and carefully observe one’s environment. Consider carefully, act decisively.” — Kano
Jigoro.

The principle underlying this is quote, will be the focus of our course. It is also the first principle of Judo, that one should pay close attention to the relationship between self and others. This idea will be explored using judo as the Method.

  • Judo is a full contact activity; student will be working in close contact with
    a partner and also instructors.
  • Although our instructors are extremely experienced in the art of judo,
injuries can still happen from time to time.
  • All students who wish to attend must always be respectful to other
    participants and the training space.
